Privacy Policy

OwlOCR is designed to process screenshots, images, scans, and PDFs on your Mac. The current Apple Vision and OCR AI modes run locally: OwlOCR does not upload your files, screenshots, clipboard content, or recognized text to us or an online AI service for OCR, and we do not use that content to train AI models.

This policy covers the OwlOCR Mac app, owlocr.com, licensing and update services, and support communications.

Information processed on your Mac

OwlOCR may locally access files you select, screenshots you capture, clipboard content you choose to copy to or from the app, OCR results, exports, app settings, cached OCR AI results, and diagnostic logs. This information remains on your Mac unless you deliberately export, share, or attach it to a message.

Screen Recording, file access, clipboard access, and Continuity Camera are provided through macOS. Granting these permissions does not by itself send their contents to OwlOCR or another company.

OwlOCR creates local diagnostic logs to help troubleshoot the app. Logs and reports may contain app and system details, OCR-related settings, runtime output, errors, and local file names or paths. You can inspect or clear the logs in OwlOCR. They are not automatically sent to us.

Purchases and licenses

For direct-download purchases, Stripe handles checkout and payment information. OwlOCR does not receive or store your full payment card number. We and the providers supporting the license service may process your purchase email; Stripe customer, checkout, payment, subscription, and product identifiers; license status; renewal or expiration information; a randomly generated installation identifier; app version; and license-validation activity. We use this information to provide and restore Pro access, manage billing, prevent fraud and abuse, and support customers.

For Mac App Store purchases, Apple processes payment. OwlOCR provides an app-generated user identifier and App Store receipt or entitlement information to RevenueCat so a purchase can be verified and restored. Apple and RevenueCat process information under their own privacy terms.

License tokens, purchase email, entitlement status, and related settings may also be stored locally on your Mac.

Website, downloads, and online connections

When you visit owlocr.com or the app connects for licensing, updates, or downloads, our infrastructure providers may process standard request information such as IP address, request URL, date and time, browser or app user agent, device or operating system information, approximate region, and security or error data. We use this information to deliver and secure the services, prevent abuse, diagnose failures, and understand aggregate traffic.

The current OwlOCR website and desktop app do not include advertising pixels or third-party behavioral analytics SDKs, and we do not track people across unrelated websites for advertising. Because we do not currently sell or share personal information for targeted advertising, Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track signals do not change our current practices.

Optional OCR AI model and runtime downloads connect to providers such as Hugging Face and GitHub. Those providers receive ordinary download-request information, but not the documents you process. Some website images may be delivered through Sanity's content delivery network. If OwlOCR opens a recognized web address in your default browser, that destination receives an ordinary browser request. If OwlOCR later embeds or links to other third-party media or services, those providers may receive standard network and device information when you load or use their content.

Support and communications

If you contact us, we receive the email address, message, and attachments you provide. Choosing “Email Logs to Support” in OwlOCR creates a draft in your email app containing a diagnostic report and log attachments. Nothing is sent until you send that email, and you may review, edit, or remove the attachments first.

If you ask to receive product news, beta access, surveys, or similar communications, we may use the contact details you provide for that purpose. Marketing communications will include an unsubscribe option where required.

How we use information

We use personal information as reasonably necessary to:

  • Provide, license, maintain, update, personalize, and secure OwlOCR.
  • Process purchases, validate licenses, restore access, and manage billing.
  • Deliver downloads, support, and online features you request.
  • Detect fraud, abuse, security incidents, and technical problems.
  • Communicate with you and respond to questions or privacy requests.
  • Meet tax, accounting, legal, and regulatory obligations.
  • Create aggregate or de-identified information to understand and improve OwlOCR. We do not attempt to re-identify that information.

Where a legal basis is required, we process information as needed to provide a service or perform a contract, for legitimate interests such as security and support, to comply with legal obligations, or with consent.

How we share information

We share information with providers that help us operate OwlOCR: Cloudflare for hosting, security, downloads, license storage, and restore emails; Stripe for direct purchases; Apple and RevenueCat for App Store purchases; email providers for support communications; and providers such as GitHub, Hugging Face, Sanity, and media or integration providers for optional downloads, site content, or features you choose to use. These providers process information under their own terms or on our behalf for the services they provide.

We may also disclose information when required by law; to protect OwlOCR, our users, or others from fraud, abuse, or harm; during a merger, financing, acquisition, reorganization, bankruptcy, or transfer of all or part of the business; or when you direct or authorize us to do so.

OwlOCR does not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising as those terms are defined by applicable privacy laws.

Optional future online features

OwlOCR may later offer optional features such as accounts, cloud sync or backup, shared workspaces, cloud or third-party AI processing, integrations, crash reporting, product analytics, personalization, or notifications. Depending on the feature, we may process account details, device and usage information, diagnostics, or content you choose to submit so we can provide, secure, support, and improve that feature.

This section describes categories of features we may introduce; it does not mean they exist today. Before a new feature sends documents, screenshots, OCR results, or other materially different information off your Mac, we will explain the transfer, update this policy, and provide a choice or obtain consent where required. Choosing an optional online feature will not turn local OCR into cloud OCR or authorize unrelated uses of your data.

If a future feature would use submitted content to train a model or improve a service beyond providing the feature you requested, we will disclose that use at or before collection and provide any controls or consent required by law.

Retention and deletion

Local files, results, settings, caches, and logs remain subject to the controls and storage lifecycle on your Mac. Depending on the item, you can delete it, clear it in OwlOCR, or remove it manually from your Mac. OwlOCR may also clear temporary files and caches automatically. Removing the app itself may not remove settings or other files stored in your Library folders.

We retain license and transaction records while needed to provide and restore your license and afterward as reasonably required for accounting, tax, fraud prevention, dispute resolution, and legal obligations. Restore links expire, although limited transaction and security records may remain. We keep support correspondence only as long as reasonably needed to resolve the request and maintain appropriate business records. Infrastructure providers retain request and security data according to their configured periods and legal obligations.

You may ask us to delete personal information held by OwlOCR. We may retain limited records when required by law, necessary to prevent fraud, or needed to preserve a license you ask us to continue providing. We will explain any applicable limitation.

Your choices and privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of personal information; object to or restrict certain processing; withdraw consent; or appeal a privacy decision. We will not discriminate against you for exercising an applicable privacy right. We may need to verify your identity before completing a request.

You can revoke OwlOCR permissions in macOS System Settings, inspect or clear local diagnostic logs and caches using available OwlOCR controls, stop using an optional online feature, or contact us about information held by our services.

Information may be processed in the United States and other countries where our providers operate. When required, we use legally recognized safeguards for international transfers.

Children

OwlOCR is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, contact us so we can address it.

Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards appropriate to the information we process. No storage or transmission system can be guaranteed completely secure.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as OwlOCR evolves. We will revise the effective date and provide additional notice through the website, app, or email when a change is material and appropriate. Materially different collection or use will not apply retroactively without any notice or consent required by law.
